Sydney : A Saltwater Perspective
Hobie Porter's new collection of paintings explores a natural history significant to the First Australians and their corresponding country, the Sydney Basin.

Unnatural History: The Tower Hill Project commemorates over 160 years since Australian artist Eugene von Guérard painted Tower Hill VIC (1855). In this exhibition Hobie Porter interrogates the environmental impacts that colonial settlement has had on this special place. Guided by von Guérard’s painting, a major revegetation program began in the 1960s to restore the flora and fauna native to the region. Porter’s depiction of Tower Hill celebrates this renewed state, while also alluding to the complexities of the restoration program.

The North Head Project
Ten contemporary Australian artists create new work in response to North Head, Sydney. Opening Friday, 8th December, Manly Art Gallery & Museum
Set in the beautiful coastal hinterland on a 100 acre private retreat in Bangalow, this workshop is designed to address the fundamentals of landscape painting using a structured & layered oil painting process in distinct stages from beginning to end. Plein air (painting directly from landscape) is an immediate painting method which requires an exploration of colour and tonal analysis. This will be detailed to help artists gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of colour accuracy and observation when responding to place.
Hobie has mastered the technical skills of oil painting and is a highly adept teacher. He is the ideal instructor for those wanting to achieve realism using oils and refine their skills, taking their practice to a new level. Hobie is a well-regarded Australian contemporary landscape painter, exhibiting since 2004.
Hobie Porter's latest body of work will travel to Arthouse Gallery in May. Meet the artist on opening night: Friday 20th May, 6pm.
